Matthew

The Gospel of Matthew

“You shall call his name, JESUS.” Matthew 1:21 The angel told Joseph to name the baby Jesus. It is the sweetest name in all the world. No other name in all the world is like Jesus. In any language, His name brings peace, His name brings healing, His name brings freedom. There is no other name like His. Precious name. Beautiful name. His name is wonderful! If anyone truly calls on the name of Jesus Christ, they will be saved! Jesus,… Jesus,… my Jesus,… name above all names!

“He shall save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21
Sin is so destructive. It hurts our families, our minds, our health, and our souls. Jesus is the mighty Savior who came to save us from our sins. The word “from” in this verse means to separate, depart, stop, and reverse. If you will allow Him, Jesus Christ will separate you from your sins, help you depart a sinful lifestyle, and stop the power of sin that is hurting you. If you will completely give Him your life, He can start to reverse the effects of sin today!

“They shall call his name Immanuel;” which, being interpreted is “God with us.” (Matthew 1:23) Jesus Christ is God. He came to earth to be with us. If we will accept Jesus and make Jesus Christ Lord of our lives His Presence will go with us. We will have God with us through every situation, problem, and difficulty in life. Jesus will be with us forever!

“Where is He who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:2)
The Lord Jesus is the King of Kings. He is the King of the universe. The wisemen were looking for Christ. Have you seen the light? Have you found Jesus? Then let’s join all creation and worship Him!

“Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!” Matthew 3:2 The first requirement for getting into the Kingdom of Heaven is to repent. The Bible says, “Repent and believe the Good News.” (Mark 1:15) It says, “Repent and be baptized.” (Acts 2:38) It was the first sermon of John the Baptist and the first message of the Lord Jesus Christ. Repent means to change our minds and turn away from our sins. Many people won’t be in Heaven because they are not willing to repent and give up their sins!

“Therefore bring forth fruit worthy of repentance!” (Matthew 3:8) Why does the Lord emphasize the need to repent? It’s for our own good. You see, when there is sin in our lives it hurts our relationship with God. We aren’t able to see the answers to prayer like we should. We can’t believe for the promises if we aren’t keeping the conditions. We can’t live in the blessings of God. We must realize that repentance is not just being sorry or feeling bad that we sinned. It is changing and living differently. It means stopping sin and living right. The Bible is showing us that there must be actions to prove that repentance is real!

(“Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t bring forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.” Matthew 3:10 How important is it to truly repent and live for God? It is vital for without repentance there is judgment and punishment. Not only do you lose the blessings of this life but you lose in the end. Repentance is compared to a tree because there should be fruit on it. Those that do not bring forth good fruit will be cast into the fire.)

“He shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” Matthew 3:11 The Lord Jesus desires to baptize us into the Spirit of God. This is a wonderful experience and it is for us today. It means to be filled and overflowing with God’s Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us power and strength to live for God. He is our helper. So, pray and ask Christ to fill you with His Spirit. Your spiritual life will be so much better. Surrender complete control to Jesus Christ and be filled daily with the Spirit of God.

“Jesus,…was baptized,.. the heavens were opened to Him,…the Spirit of God descending as a dove.” Matthew 3:16 The Lord Jesus was baptized in water as an example for all those who would become Christians. Therefore, you need to be baptized in water once you have made your decision to follow Christ. This is the beginning of your Christian life, then you must obey Jesus Christ and live for Him or baptism is just a meaningless ritual. After He was baptized, the Holy Spirit filled Jesus Christ and gave Him the power He needed to do God’s will. It will be the same for us. Come Holy Spirit, we need You, fill our lives today!

“Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17 Jesus Christ made His Father happy. He lived to please Him. In fact, this is the reason all of us were created. We exist for the pleasure and will of God. So, live to please the Lord and the Lord will be pleased with you, also. The you will be truly happy with your life!

But He answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4
Most people are very concerned with their physical life. They make sure they have plenty to eat. They exercise, take vitamins, and take care of their bodies. They pamper the flesh. But the physical realm can never give us real life- spiritual life, eternal life! Jesus said we cannot live on physical food alone. We can look alive on the outside but inside we’ll be dead.We must have spiritual food. We must feed upon the Word of God! Without the Bible you will become weak and sick spiritually. It is vital to read and think about the Bible on a daily basis.

“Then Jesus said to him, Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve Him only.”Matthew 4:10
The devil wants to take worship away from God and he succeeds when other things are more important to us than the Lord. People make idols of money, success, possessions, or even themselves. They let other things steal their time, money, and attention. Is there anything in your life more important to you than Jesus Christ? Do you live like Jesus is the greatest thing in your life? Christ is the only true and living God. Worship and serve Him!

He (Jesus) said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers for men.” Matthew 4:19 As we follow Jesus Christ He will make us “fishermen”. This means the Lord will use us to influence people and turn them to God. What greater thing could you do for others than to bring them eternal life through Christ? What an honor and responsibility. The more closely we follow Jesus the more He can use us. So, let’s fish for people!

“Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.” Matthew 4:23 The ministry of Jesus Christ included preaching and healing. They go hand in hand. This is part of the “Good News”. It didn’t matter how serious the illness was or what type of disease. The Lord Jesus healed everyone who came to Him in faith. He is still the same today. So, look to Him and trust Him. Jesus is the Healer!

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” Matthew 5:3
Most people feel they are somehow good enough to go to Heaven when they die. However, the Bible says nobody is good enough! We have all sinned and fallen short. Self-righteousness will keep many away from the Kingdom of Heaven. Pride will destroy. On the other hand, blessed are the humble. These are the poor in spirit, who realize they need Jesus. They know they need help. They turn to Christ in faith, surrender their lives, and look to Him for help.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6 You will seek after what you desire. So, what are you hungry for? Many people hunger for this world and what it has to offer. But the things of this world will let you down. It is a blessing to hunger for God and His righteousness. We are blessed when we seek a closer relationship with Jesus and desire to become more like Him!

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8 The Bible gets right down to the “heart” of the matter. Going through the motions is not enough. Being religious is not enough. How is your heart? How are your attitudes, desires, thoughts and motives? Jesus looks right into our hearts. To see the things of God clearly we must be clean inside. Blessed are the pure in heart!

“You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, how will it be salted? It is then good for nothing.” Matthew 5:13 Salt makes everything taste better. It preserves food and makes us thirsty. Since this is a comparison for Christians, we should ask ourselves, Is our life touching those around us? Are they getting thirsty for God? Are they being drawn to Christ? We must have a “salty” Christian life. We must influence the world for Christ not the other way around. If we lose our saltiness we are good for nothing.

“You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden.” Matthew 5:14 Another comparison for Christians. Like driving at night on the highway and coming to a big city. You can see the lights in the distance from far away. We are to be lights shining in this dark world. So, don’t hide your Christianity. Be bold. You are the light of the world!

“Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 This is a mixed-up, messed-up world. It’s full of sin. As Christians, we shine by doing good deeds. People need to see our Christianity in action. This brings glory to God. The world is watching, so let your light shine!

Jesus turned around and said to her, “Daughter, be encouraged! Your faith has made you well.” And the woman was healed at that moment. (Matthew 9:22 NLT) Be encouraged today! Jesus Christ is the miracle-worker. He can do anything. He can change any situation. Jesus sees us, loves us, and wants to help us. So, pray to the Lord today. Tell Him your needs. Reach out by faith and touch Jesus. Faith will make you whole. You can be helped at this very moment.

“Be careful that you don’t do your charitable giving before men, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 6:1 So much of religion is just a show, but the Lord is looking on our heart. We must have the right motives as we serve God. It cannot be to exalt ourselves or to be seen by man. No pride, boasting, and showing off or you’ll lose your reward. So, be humble and don’t advertise your good deeds. Then you will be rewarded in Heaven!

“Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10 Usually people pray and focus on their own needs. But, our prayers should first and foremost be about God and His Kingdom. This is how Jesus taught us to pray in what is commonly called The Lord’s Prayer”. Then after we pray earnestly about God’s Kingdom we can pray about our own needs.

“Don’t lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal.” Matthew 6:19
Many are so concerned with getting treasures here on earth. Don’t they realize everything down here is temporary and can be gone in a second? So, don’t worry about getting riches here instead put your treasure in Heaven. Everything you do for the Lord, if you have a good motive, can be treasure in Heaven for you. So, serve the Lord with all your heart and do everything you can for Christ down here then you will have treasure in Heaven!

“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” Matthew 6:22 We can’t see clearly if we have the wrong motives. If our eyes are blurred by selfishness we will not see correctly. Greed will distort our vision. We need clear eyes with the single purpose of serving God. Tainted vision affects our whole life. When our hearts are pure, then we can see correctly!

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Money.” Matthew 6:24 It is impossible to serve two masters for there is a conflict of interests. We all have to choose. So, what will it be? Money, pleasure, people, or things? Whose orders will you follow? Only Jesus is worthy. So, choose today to make Jesus your one and only Master!

“But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33 Many people have this backwards. They seek things. They pray later. Instead, we should seek God first! So, make the Lord and His Kingdom the most important area in your life, then everything else you need will be given to you. Put prayer, Bible study, attending church, witnessing, and serving the Lord as your top priorities. God will take care of everything else. Seek His Kingdom first!

“But I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.” Matthew 5:28 Lust is so common. Pornography is rampant and it is a dangerous, addictive trap. To the Lord entertaining thoughts of sin is like doing it. Jesus knows our every thought. So, we must be very careful to guard our minds. Keep your mind on pure and good things. Watch your thoughts!

“Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.” Matthew 6:34 The Bible says we don’t have to worry. This is a great truth- live one day at a time! You can’t change the past and the future is not here yet, so why be anxious? Cast you cares upon the Lord. Trust Him with all your heart. Don’t worry about the future for Jesus will give grace and strength for each new day.

“Don’t judge, so that you won’t be judged.” Matthew 7:1 It’s easy to become judgmental or critical of others but the Lord says it will come back to you! We all need mercy for ourselves so we should give it to others. Obviously, we cannot approve of a person living in sin but we should beware of having a critical spirit. Kindness, mercy, and love should characterize our lives.

“You hypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother’s eye.” Matthew 7:5
Jesus said if we want to help others we must look first at our faults. When we are transformed and set free, then we can help others. So, deal with your own issues and let God change you. Then you can truly help others.

“Therefore whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets.” Matthew 7:12 This is called the golden rule. It would change the world if people followed it. It can change your world. This fits in with loving our neighbor as ourselves. How would you like to be treated? Then treat others the same way!

“Narrow is the gate, and narrow is the way that leads to life! Few are those who find it.” Matthew 7:14 It is staggering to think that the vast majority of people will not make it to Heaven. Many think that some kind of belief system will save them. Following and obeying the Lord Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life. The Bible teaches faith without works or action is dead! We must have a living faith in Christ. This is a faith that surrenders our lives to Him and then lives our lives for Him. People think this kind of preaching is too narrow-minded but Jesus said so! Christ knows what He is talking about, for after all He is the Son of God who came to save us. Jesus said, follow the narrow way!

“Therefore, by their fruits you will know them.” Matthew 7:20
Lots of people say they are speaking for God but how can you tell a false prophet? By listening carefully. Are they preaching whole-hearted devotion and obedience to Christ or an ear-tickling, man-pleasing, fluffy message? Does their lifestyle reflect a true servant-heart or are they selfish and greey of gain? Finally, is anyone changed by their message and drawn closer to Jesus or are people just puffed up full of pride? By their fruit you will know them!

“Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock.” Matthew 7:24
Wise people obey Jesus. It’s not enough just to hear the message we must do what He says. A person who doesn’t obey is building their house upon the sand. When the storms come their house will be destroyed. So build your life upon the rock- Christ Jesus! As an old hymn says, “On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.”

“Jesus stretched out his hand, and touched him, saying, I want to,… immediately his leprosy was cleansed.” Matthew 8:3
Some may wonder if Jesus Christ wants to heal and do miracles. Does He really want to? The man with leprosy asked the same question. To the dying, diseased man Christ said, “I want to.” In the Bible, the Lord Jesus always did His Father’s will. So, we know it is God’s will to heal because Jesus Christ healed all who came to Him in faith. It’s easy for us to get discouraged and doubt but always remember- the Lord Jesus wants to help you!

Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” Matthew 8:7 These are the words of Christ to the Roman Army Officer ( called a Centurion) when he came to Jesus on behalf of his sick servant. Christ said He would come and heal him. Today you can bring your needs, problems, and requests to the Lord. Jesus Christ is the Mighty God and He responds to the problems of mankind with compassion and power. Whatever your situation He can do something for with God all things are possible. Seek Him and you will find Him!

“Jesus said to the centurion, Go your way. Let it be done for you as you have believed. His servant was healed in that hour.” Matthew 8:13
The Lord Jesus is all-powerful. He can do anything. But do we believe it? The Roman soldier believed the Lord would heal his servant and Jesus did it. Here’s what you should do: first, find a promise in the Bible that pertains to you; second, fulfill the conditions connected to the promise whatever they may be; third; as you believe, it will be done for you!

“Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, Son, cheer up! Your sins are forgiven you.” Matthew 9:2 Some people think they are saved because of baptism, communion, or confirmation. But no church or religious ritual can take away your sins. Only Jesus Christ has the power to forgive sins. So, come to Him today and confess your sins. Jesus will make you clean inside. He will wash you whiter than snow. Then you can cheer up, for your sins will be forgiven!

“But Jesus, turning around and seeing her, said, Daughter, cheer up! Your faith has made you whole. And the woman was made well from that hour.” Matthew 9:22 Whatever your situation, Jesus sees you today. Are you sick, distressed or discouraged? Problems piling up? Don’t know what to do? Then cheer up! Have faith in Jesus Christ and His mighty power. Your faith will make you whole!

“Then He (Jesus) touched their eyes, and said, According to your faith it will be done to you.” Matthew 9:29 The two blind men were healed by the mighty power of Jesus Christ because they believed. This story teaches us that you must have faith if you want to see God do miracles. Without faith it is impossible to please Him. So, you must believe that Jesus Christ will answer your prayers and do something in your situation. Then, according to your faith it will be done!

“Jesus went about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.” Matthew 9:35 Jesus Christ is the great miracle worker. He can solve any problem. He can heal no matter what the cause or the illness. Notice in this passage, Jesus healed every disease and every sickness. Nothing is too hard for Him. What a wonderful, loving Savior. Call upon Him today!

“Pray therefore that the Lord of the harvest will send out laborers into his harvest.” Matthew 9:38 Few people are really willing and excited to work for the Lord. Most people want the blessings but they don’t find time to do anything for God’s Kingdom. They work hard on their jobs to obtain money for themselves but they do nothing for the cause of Christ. What about you? Could you help your church or pastor more? Could you give more, pray more, share your faith more? The task is tremendous. The harvest is huge. The Lord needs each one of us. So, pray for laborers and don’t forget to be one yourself!

“He who doesn’t take his cross and follow after me, isn’t worthy of me.” Matthew 10:38 Christ has strong words for those who would be His followers. We must love Jesus more than anything else in this world and we must be willing to commit all and follow Him. For we aren’t worthy of Him if we won’t surrender everything. This is the only way to peace and joy and evberlasting life. So, pick up your cross and start following Jesus!

“Great multitudes followed Him; and He healed them all.” Matthew 12:15 Do you ever feel alone? Lost in the crowd? Jesus Christ is so loving, He doesn’t forget anyone. He sees you today and knows all about you. In the Bible, great crowds of people came to Him and He healed them all! Why don’t you follow Jesus? He will help you, too!

“Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” Matthew 12:25 Make no mistake about it, division destroys! So, don’t let the devil divide your home, marriage, or church. Be humble, forgivng, and kind. Be patient and live in peace. Get rid of anger, pride, and contention. Be in harmony and one accord. A house divided will not stand!

“In his name, the nations will hope.” (Matthew 12:21) What trouble there is in the world today. Look at the economic collapse, natural disasters, disease, violence, and wars. Is there any hope? Yes, there is. Jesus Christ is the hope of the world! Don’t give up on the world situation. Jesus is moving among the nations. There is hope for all the world. It’s found in the name of Jesus!

“I tell you that every idle word that men speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.” Matthew 12:36 How can people be so lax in the way they talk? There is so much swearing, slander, crude, dirty, and downright mean language. Don’t we know that Christ will judge our very words? In fact, every idle word we speak shall be judged! Every little word spoken in secret will be revealed. We ought to pray- Help me Lord, put a watch before my tongue and guard the words of my lips, may everything I say and do bring glory unto you.

“Then he goes, and takes with himself seven other spirits more evil than he is, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first.” (Matthew 12:45) In this verse Jesus speaks of the danger of backsliding. It says if you were once delivered and you turn back from Christ it will be seven times worse. The demons will come back with a vengance. The solution? Don’t backslide! Stay close to Jesus. Be faithful in church attendance. Pray constantly. Read your Bible and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 12:50 “For whoever does the will of my Father who is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.” Are we all children of God? The answer is—-No! We are all created by Him but we must be born again to get into the family of God. If we have true faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, we will make Him our Lord. Surrendering to Christ by fatih is the key. It will bring us into God’s family. Then, those who are in God’s family will obey the Father and do His will.

“He spoke to them many things in parables, saying, Behold, a farmer went out to sow.” (Matthew 13:3) The Lord Jesus used illustrations and examples from everyday life to teach spiritual truths. These stories that He told are called parables. This one is called “The Parable of the Sower”. It shows us the different results that happen when various people listen to the Bible. To some the word of God helps and changes their lives for the better but to others nothing happens. Why is that, since the people were hearing the same message? The answer is found in each persons heart!

“Some seeds fell by the roadside, and the birds came and devoured them.” (Matthew 13:4) This is talking about people who don’t really believe the Bible. When they hear the word, the devil comes to steal the word of God from them. The seed is eaten up before it can take root. And so it is with unbelief. The devil comes to steal, kill and destroy. Can’t you see? The evil one is attacking God’s word and trying to take it from your life. Friends, we should love the Bible. We should read it daily, study, and diligently obey. We should put our trust in the God that never fails and in His mighty word. Because if we don’t really believe it,… the enemy will steal it away!

“Others fell on rocky ground, where they didn’t have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of earth. When the sun had risen, they were scorched. Because they had no roots they withered away.” (Matthew 13:5-6) Some folks get real excited about the Lord but then they fizzle out. You see them for a little while and then they are gone. The reason is they never get roots. They float around from church to church never getting grounded or connected. Do they think you can go to church occasionally and really grow? Furthermore, can a person read the Bible once in a while and be strong in the Lord? The truth of the matter is, we must become disciples! This means to be followers of Christ who consistently learn His word and constantly put it into practice.

“Others fell among thorns. The thorns grew up and choked them.” (Matthew 13:7) Here the plants grew but they had stunted growth and never produced any fruit. What was the problem? They were worrying about their needs in life, they were fooled by the desire to get rich, and they were wanting all kinds of things. Basically, the were worldly-minded. Their hearts were on the things of this world. The Bible says to put God first and He will give you all you need. Our hearts and minds shoud be focused on the things of God.

“Others fell on good soil, and yielded fruit: some one hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty.” (Matthew 13:8) Here we find good ground. For these hearts are honest and open. They want God and are willing to submit to Him. These people are all producing fuit at various levels. This is what the Lord wants for everyone of us. To receive His word and be productive.

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (Matthew 13:9) Many people were listening to Christ but only some were truly hearing Him. My Grandmother used to say about us kids when we weren’t listening, that the words went “in one ear and out the other.” In other words we heard but did not take it in. How we desperately need to hear and understand what the Lord is saying. But to do that we will need open, humble, and submissive hearts. So read the Bible and pray that you may understand it, then obey whatever God is saying.

“The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather out of his Kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and those who do iniquity, and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 13:41-42) Many are deluded into thinking that just about everyone goes to Heaven. Listen, at the end of the age, Jesus will send out His angels and they will take out of His Kingdom all those living in sin. There will be a separation. Those who have rejected Christ and lived for themselves will not be in Heaven! They will be thrown into the fire. That’s why everyone everywhere needs to repent, turn from their sins, and surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ now! God loves us and doesn’t want anyone to perish but time is running out.

“Then the righteous will shine forth like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. (Matthew 13:43) For those who love and trust Jesus Christ,… for those who have found forgiveness,… for those who live a righteous life,… there is a great future ahead. They will be delivered from Hell. They will not be condemned. At the final judgment, they will not be thrown into the Lake of Fire. Instead they will go to Heaven and shine like the sun forever!

“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field. (Matthew 13:44) Finding Jesus is like finding a great treasure. Why don’t people “get it”? Because all they see is a “field”. Only religion. Just going to church. They think to themselves- there are so many religions in the world and everybody has their own beliefs- so what’s the big deal. They don’t understand because they haven’t found Jesus! They don’t know how valuable Christianity is because they haven’t discovered the treasure,… Jesus Christ,… His awesome Presence, His unlimited Power, and His matchless Love. Once you discover Christ and understand how valuable salvation is, you will gladly give up everything you have to get Him!

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is seeking fine pearls, and having found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it.” (Matthew 13:45-46). In this parable a man is looking for pearls. One day He finds one so valuable and desirable that he sells all his other pearls to get it. It cost him everything to get it but it was worth it to him. Ask yourself, Do you want to have Jesus? Are you willing to give up everything else to get Him? Jesus is the “pearl” of infinite worth.

“So will it be in the end of the world. The angels will come forth, and separate the wicked from among the righteous.” (Matthew 13:49) There is coming a day when everything will be revealed. Those who pretend to be Christians will be exposed. Those who profess Christianity but live in sin will be judged. Backsliders will stand before the Lord. Many will be condemned. If you are not right with God, turn from your sins today. The Lord sees all of those who are not righteous. Please repent before it is too late! We want to see you in Heaven.

“He didn’t do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” (Matthew 13:58) Why aren’t some of our prayers answered? Where are the miracles? Why don’t we see more happen? Because unbelief will hinder the power of God. The Lord Jesus wants to do might things in our lives but He can’t if we don’t really believe. Remember, the Bible is true for it is the word of God. You can believe it, trust it, and base your life upon it. The Lord always keeps His promises. So, keep believing no matter what you see, think, or feel because Jesus never fails!

“For John said to him, It is not lawful for you to have her.” (Matthew 14:4) John the Baptist stood up to King Herod. John told Herod that he was living in sexual sin and breaking God’s law. It cost John his life. What about today? Is there someone who will stand up to the wickedness of our day? Someone who will get on TV and tell presidents and leaders that they are doing evil. Someone who is not afraid of man. Someone who is willing to lay down their own life! There is so much evil. May God raise up some new “John the Baptists” who will preach the truth at any cost!

“Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick. (Matthew 14:14) Again we see the love and compassion of Christ. Notice, Jesus sees us and He knows what we need. He loves us and He can do something about our situation. Christ is still the mighty healer. He loves you and wants to do great and mighty things in your life!

“He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave to the multitudes. They all ate, and were filled.” (Matthew 14:19-20) This is a wonderful miracle of provision. Jesus multiplied the loaves and the fish so everyone had enough. If you are a disciple and you are following Jesus then He will take care of you. There wasn’t enough but the Lord still took care of them! We live in tough economic times but the Lord has promised to provide for those who put His Kingdom first.

“In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.” (Matthew 14:25) I love this story. Jesus Christ walked on the water to come to His disciples. It surprised them. Listen, Jesus can do anything! Does that surprise you? Trust in Him and turn to Him. He is the the Master of the Sea and the Ruler of the Universe!

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27) One of the great blessings of following the Lord Jesus is the “fear factor”. He takes away fear! In our darkest hours He comes to us and says “cheer up!” In fact, we never have to be afraid if He is with us. What are you facing today? Call out to the Lord and He will calm your fears.

But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” (Matthew 14:30) Aren’t people foolish? Always looking at circumstances. Can’t we believe that God is greater than any circumstances? Don’t look at your problems, look at the Savior! Do you feel like you are sinking? Cry out to Jesus, ask Him to save you, and He will help you!

Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:31) Why do we doubt? Perhaps, we don’t really know Jesus. Or if we do, then we don’t know Him well enough. He is kinder than any father. He is more compassionate that any mother. He is stronger, wiser, and more loving than anyone could ever imagine. Can you trust the One who died for you? The One who shed His blood and gave His life for you? Of course you can! There is no one like Jesus!

“When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.” (Matthew 14:32) The storm was raging. The situation looked bad. What could the disciples do? They had the answer because Jesus had just gotten into the boat. What we need is Jesus in our “boat”. The main problem is not money, relationships or health but we need Jesus in our lives. This is not lukewarm lip service or mere mental belief but a sincere surrender, trust, and commitment to Christ as Lord. Storms are raging in our world. The answer is Jesus Christ! We need Jesus in our homes, in our schools, in our government, and in our lives. Jesus is the answer. He can calm the storms.

“Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, You are truly the Son of God!” (Matthew 14:33) If you will read the New Testament with an open heart- you will come to a great conclusion: Jesus Christ is truly the Son of God! Those around Him realized that He was more than a man. Jesus walked on water, healed blind eyes, multiplied food, and raised the dead! There has never been anyone like Him. There will never be another. Jesus Christ is the Son of God and He is God the Son. When you discover this truth, you will come and worship Him also!

“Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,
Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat bread.” (Matthew 15:1-2) It’s no wonder so many are turned off by traditional church. There are tons of rules and most are not in the Bible! What about it? Do you have ideas and practices that aren’t taught in God’s word? If so, it’s time to change and get back to what God says in the Bible. The Pharisees had lots of religion but they were not saved.

“He answered them, Why do you also disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?” (Matthew 15:3) People can always rationalize disobedience. They have their reasons for not obeying the commands of God. Whether they’re too busy, too sad, too tired, or too mad, they make excuses thinking God will understand. But He doesn’t. Are you following the Bible? If not, what’s your excuse for disobeying God? Don’t make up things that aren’t in the Bible to get your own way. Instead, stay true to the Lord and obey His commands. Then you will be truly blessed!

“For God commanded, Honor your father and your mother.” (Matthew 15:4) People need to honor their parents. Are they still alive? Then be thankful and treat them well. Were they perfect? Probably not. Did you ever disagree with them? Of course. But you must realize that this is one of the Ten Commandments and it is full of blessing for those who will obey it.

“These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.” (Matthew 15:8) Countless people go to church and sing the songs but they are still far away from God. They practice religion but have no relationship with the Lord. Jesus wants our hearts. It’s wrong to be religious with just your head. Is a mental belief in Christ really all there is to being a Christian? Of course, not. The Lord is not impressed with mere formality and rituals. Jesus Christ died for us and He is Lord. He deserves all our hearts and all of our lives!

“Then the disciples came, and said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying?” (Matthew 15:12) Sometimes people are offended when you tell them the truth. They don’t like it because it confronts their lifestyle. However, the truth will set a person free- if they will receive it. Pastors and leaders, don’t change the message of the Bible one bit to please people. It is better to offend men then to offend God!

“Leave them alone. They are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a ditch.” (Matthew 15:14) Here the Lord is talking about the Pharisees. They were very religious but they were also blind spiritually. Just because someone is a minister or religious leader does not mean they know what they are talking about. Some church leaders do know even know the Lord. We need to listen to and follow those who really have a relationship with Christ. Listen to people who love and serve Jesus Christ. Follow those who are living for the Lord and proclaiming the truth of the Bible. Then you won’t fall into a ditch!

“For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.” (Matthew 15:19) The main problem that all people have is a sin problem. Not just a little lying, drugs, booze, or lust- but sin! Evil comes out of the heart. It’s the heart that need to be changed. Who can help us? There is one who can change a heart and His name is Jesus Christ. He can take a drunkard and make him a sober man. He can take a criminal and make him an honest man. Jesus can take a sinner and make him a righteous man. Because Christ can change a heart. Will you let Him change yours?

“His disciples came and begged him, saying, Send her away; for she cries after us.” (Matthew 15:23) Sometimes the disciples were very uncaring. They did not want to be annoyed. Didn’t they know that Jesus came to help people? That was to be their job also. How about us? Are we too busy or unconcerned to help others? Lord, forgive us. The world is hurting, so let’s do all we can to help others.

“Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you even as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.” (Matthew 15:28) The distraught woman came to Jesus to ask Him to help her daughter. At first, it seemed Jesus would not help. But she was persistent. She kept asking and the Lord actually commended her for her faith. She got the answer to her prayers because she did not give up. What does this mean to us today? Keep praying and believing, and never give up.

“So that the multitude wondered when they saw the mute speaking, injured whole, lame walking, and blind seeing-and they glorified the God of Israel.” (Matthew 15:31) Perhaps, you wonder about Jesus Christ. Who is He? Could He be the Son of God? My friend, read the Bible accounts of Jesus’ life in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. You will find there a Man who is more than a man. Jesus walked on water. He healed blind eyes. He made the lame walk and He raised dead people back to life! Finally, He came alive again and rose from His own grave after suffering a terrible death on the cross. Jesus Christ arose triumphant. He is the living Savior and Lord of all.

“Jesus summoned his disciples and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days and have nothing to eat.” (Matthew 15:32) Are you in need today? Perhaps you have financial or family difficulties. Jesus wants to have compassion on you. He cares about your struggles and sees you in your need. Why don’t you turn to Jesus Christ and ask Him to help you? He loves you so much and He died for you.

“The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.” (Matthew 16:1) If you saw a miracle would you really serve Jesus? Probably not. There are amazing things around us everyday, but do we notice? We should serve the Lord because He created us. It is His world and we are living in it. Jesus is the true God from Heaven who became a man and came to earth to rescue us. We owe Him everything. So, don’t seek signs- seek after Him!

Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” (Matthew 16:6) What is the “yeast of the Pharisees”? It is hypocrisy. Saying one thing but doing another. Professing to be a Christian and living in sin. Acting very spiritual but not living the life. Like people say, there are too many hypocrites in the church. So, don’t be one! This yeast can spread and destroy many.

“Don’t you yet perceive, neither remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?” (Matthew 16:9) Why do we forget the great things that God has done for us? We get in the same situation and then worry about it. Didn’t the Lord Jesus come through before? Won’t He do it again? The disciples forgot how the Lord had provided for them. Jesus multiplied food for thousands of people. He still will provide today for those who love and serve Him.

“Then they understood that he didn’t tell them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” (Matthew 16:12) People love to get information. This is good but it is dangerous. Is the information you are getting correct? If it’s from the Bible that’s good, but there are many decevers out there. One of the biggest lies is that you can say one thing and do another. This is hypocrisy. To say you are a Christian but not obey Jesus Christ is deception. Jesus must be our Lord and that means we live in submissive obedience to Him.

“He said to them, But who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15) People have their different ideas about Jesus Christ. They may think He was a good man, a wonderful teacher, or a great religious leader. What do you think? Your eternal destiny depends on your answer to this question and what you do with it. Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died on the cross and rose from the dead. He is the Messiah and the Savior of the world. Jesus Christ is the only answer to mankind for forgiveness, salvation, and etenal life. He is Lord of the Universe. Do you believe this? If you do, is He Lord of your life?

“I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18 It’s a great comfort to know that Christ is the Rock. You can depend on Him. You can trust in Him. Jesus is at work to build His church. In spite of opposition and persecution the true church of Jesus Christ will prevail. The devil can’t stop it. Hell loses, Jesus wins!

“I will give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; and whatever you release on earth will be released in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19) What a verse this is. What authority and power in prayer. Those who are true Christians can agree together in prayer and God has promised He will answer. The keys to heaven are praying together in unity and according to God’s will. All things are possible. There is power in united prayer!

“But He turned, and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.” (Matthew 16:23) Peter loved the Lord but he was always saying the wrong thing. When Jesus said He would die upon the cross, Peter couldn’t accept it. So, Peter contradicted the Lord. Then Christ rebuked Him for his thinking was faulty. Just like today, people don’t understand. Without the cross we can’t be forgiven. Without Jesus shedding His precious blood, we could not be saved. It is actually devilish to think that people can be saved without the cross of Christ. There is only one way to God and that is through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24) The Christian life involves sacrificing your will and your desires to follow Christ. To deny means to lose sight of one’s self and one’s own interests. But it is even stronger than that for it also means to utterly renounce and disown. To follow Jesus we must lose sight of ourselves and renounce our own will and desires. For the cross speaks of death, and if we want to follow Jesus, we must die to our selfish lives and live only for Christ.

“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 16:25) If a person decides to not follow Jesus, then they will end up losing. They will lose out on the blessings and help of the Lord in this life but more importantly they will lose out on Heaven when they die. However, if a person will give up their life to follow Christ then they will gain real life. They will receive an abundant life of God’s blessings now and an eternity of bliss in Heaven later. What will you choose?

“For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26) How many people go after the things of the world. They desire money, fame, success, and possessions. But we have to look in the light of eternity. Because life on earth is so short and eternity is so long we must make decisions that count for eternity. To trade a few years of selfish pleasure and receive a million, billion years of torment in hell is a bad deal. Don’t sell out your soul for anything. Instead live your life for Jesus Christ and you will gain your soul and live in Heaven forever!

“For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds.” (Matthew 16:27) The Bible tells us that Jesus is coming back to earth again! When Christ returns He will judge everyone for the things they have done. Think about it. Do your actions or deeds matter in this life? According to this verse, they surely do. What you do in this life will be judged by Jesus Christ when He returns and sits on His glorious throne. So it behooves us to live a life pleasing to God and obedient to the Lord Jesus. Then when He returns, we can hear Him say “well done”.

“He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light.” (Matthew 17:2) Christ is the Son of God but He also shines like the real sun. The multitudes thought He was only a carpenter’s son but He is the glorious, awesome Son of the living God. Let Him shine in and then let Him shine out of your life!

“Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.” (Matthew 17:5) God, the Father, is very happy with His Son. For Jesus Christ always did His Father’s will. What about you? Are you making the Lord happy? Is He pleased with your life? Listen to His Son and do what He says, then God will be pleased with you also!

“Lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus.” (Matthew 17:8) Searching for answers? Help for your life? The trouble is people are looking in the wrong places. Lift up your eyes and look to Jesus Christ. He has the answers. Jesus can help you. Turn your eyes unto Him.

“So I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him.” (Matthew 17:16) What’s wrong with the churches today? We’re missing the power. Just like the disciples of old, people are coming and not getting help. We need to return to some basic principles of Christianity: like repentance, faith, holiness, and seeking God with all our might. Praying and fasting will break through strongholds. Faith will move mountains. Jesus Christ is the same. We must do whatever it takes to get the power back.

“And Jesus rebuked the demon; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.” (Matthew 17:18) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is still the healer. He still sets the captives free. Christ has all power in heaven and earth. Look to Him today and call upon His name. Seek His face and watch Him work in your life.

Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief. For most certainly I tell you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20) The disciples asked Jesus why they could not cast out the demon. The Lord Jesus told them it was because of their lack of faith. In this encouraging verse, the Lord says all we need is a tiny bit of real faith and we can move mountains. Only believe and all things will be possible for you!

“But this kind doesn’t go out except by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:21)
The disciples asked the Lord Jesus why they could not cast out a certain demon to set a person free. Then Jesus spoke this verse to them. It shows us that some demonic strongholds can only be destroyed through prayer and fasting. Fasting means going without food. When He was here on earth the Lord Jesus fasted for 40 days at the beginning of His ministry. Praying while fasting is a powerful spiritual weapon that is to able to achieve the impossible! Start using this weapon in your life and watch what happens.

In that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” (Matthew 18:1) Silly disciples. Arguing about who is the greatest. Didn’t they realize that the Greatest One was right there with them? Pride is awful. Pride brings strife, division, and hurts others. Who is the greatest? Jesus is! Don’t ever forget it. We are only His servants.

Jesus said, “Most certainly I tell you, unless you turn, and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 18:3) Children are humble, submissive and accepting. The Bible says unless a person becomes like a child they cannot enter God’s Kingdom. Will you humble yourself today and crown Jesus Christ as your Lord? If you will submit to Christ and humbly obey Him then you can be part of His Kingdom!

“Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 18:4) We admire great people in our world. Rich, Famous, Successful. But God honors the humble. The greatest person in His Kingdom is the one who is a humble servant to others.

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him that a huge millstone should be hung around his neck, and that he should be sunk in the depths of the sea.” (Matthew 18:6) Be careful how you treat children, especially in their relationship with God. Don’t cause them to stumble by your words or by your actions. If they follow your example, will they get closer to Jesus? Remember, if you live a sinful life in front of them God will hold you accountable. Instead, lead the children closer to Jesus. Show them by your life what it means to really follow and obey Jesus Christ.

“If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire.” (Matthew 18:8) Jesus Christ spoke of hell as a real place. Furthermore, He taught that we should do whatever it takes to stay out of hell. Basically, we should stop sinning and live for Jesus. We should stay close to God, obey the Bible, and never turn back on Jesus. Hell is horrible. But heaven is wonderful, so do all you can to say of of hell and do all you can to make it to heaven.

“For the Son of Man came to save that which was lost.” (Matthew 18:11) Jesus Christ has a mission. He came to earth to save sinners. Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the world, but He can’t save people unless they realize they are lost and they need a Savior. The Lord does not want anyone to be lost but you most choose Christ. If you are a Christian your mission is the same. Tell others about Jesus. Witness to them. Help them come to Christ. Show people that they need the Lord. Seek to save the lost!

“Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.” (Matthew 18:14) Listen, God does not want anyone to go to hell. That’s why He sent Jesus to die for us on the cross. However, if a person rejects Jesus Christ, they will perish. The Lord gave each of us freedom of choice. He loves us all so much but if we won’t turn from our sins and live for Christ there is no hope.

“If your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained back your brother.” (Matthew 18:15) Got a problem with somebody who has wronged you? Then go to them and talk about it. Don’t gossip or speak evil of them behind their back. The Lord has the pattern to follow here. If they won’t listen then take another with you to talk with them. If they still won’t listen take it to the church leadership. If they won’t listen to the church then cut off relations with them. This is the biblical pattern. Hopefully they will listen, but if not you did your best.

Jesus said “Assuredly I tell you, that if two of you will agree on earth concerning anything that they will ask, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:19) There is great power when Christians pray together. As we join our voices in unity, we can ask anything (in accordance with God’s will) and God promises to do it! Do you have a prayer partner? How about some Christian friends at church that you can agree in prayer with? Don’t miss out on this promise. For what power there is in united prayer!

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20) Christian brothers and sisters, how we need each other! In this verse, we see the importance of believers meeting together. As we gather together, the presence of Jesus is in our midst. Together we can have Jesus very close. Together we are stronger. Together we can move mountains! This is why Christians in many countries risk their lives just to go to church. But how important is church to you?

“Then Peter came and said to him, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Until seven times? Jesus said to him, I don’t tell you until seven times, but, until seventy times seven.” (Matthew 18:21-22) Forgiveness is such an important principle. Jesus said we must forgive 490 times a day. Really, this is unlimited forgiveness extended to others. Are you glad the Lord forgives you? Of course! But, if we won’t forgive others- we cannot be forgiven!

“Therefore the Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who wanted to reconcile accounts with his servants.” (Matthew 18:23) Listen, everyone is going to give an account to God. This is good news and bad news. It’s bad news if you’ve been an unfaithful servant. The Lord will hold you accountable. But it’s good news for those who are good and faithful servants. They will be blessed and rewarded. But always remember, the day of reckoning is coming. The King, Jesus Christ, will return to earth and everyone will give an account to Him. No one is getting away with anything and the righteous will be rewarded.

“The lord of that servant, being moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.” (Matthew 18:27) The Lord has so much compassion. His mercy reaches to the Heavens! He wants to save. He wants to forgive. Jesus loves us so much. Can you realize how much you owe Christ for sinning against Him? If so, turn to Him and ask for His forgiveness. No matter what you’ve done, the blood of Jesus can wash you clean. Then don’t be an ungrateful servant, repent of your old ways, and live for the Lord!
“So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, don’t let man tear apart.” (Matthew 19:6) We live in a time where divorce is rampant. Vows are broken, children are devastated, and lives are ruined. In marriage, something wonderful happens. God makes two people merge into one. The Bible says, since God has put them together, let no man pull them apart! People have become much too loose on their commitment to marriage. If our marriage needs help, look to Jesus. Pray together and ask for His help. Go to church and serve the Lord together. Read the Bible and do what it says. Put into practice the principles of love, kindness, forgiveness, and patience. Stay true to your spouse. If you both follow Jesus with all your heart things will get better!

“Then little children were brought to him, that he should lay his hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, Allow the little children, and don’t forbid them to come to me; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these.” (Matthew 19:13-14) Jesus loves children. So, don’t keep the children away from Him. Bring them to church. Teach them the Bible. Pray with them. Show them what it means to be a commited Christian. As they come to know, love, and follow Jesus Christ, they will be blessed throughout their lives, and you will be blessed to see them love the Lord.

“Behold, one came to him and said, “Good teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?” (Matthew 19:16) This is the most important question you will ever ask. Do you know the answer to it? How does a person get eternal life? It’s not through our greatness nor through a certain religion or ritual. The Bible says. “In Him is life.” You see, Jesus Christ is life. If you have Him you have eternal life and if you don’t have Christ then you don’t have eternal life. So, is Christ truly in your life? Does He live in you? If not, you don’t have eternal life. But, if the Spirit of Christ really dwells in you then you have life because you have Him!

“Jesus said, ” ‘You shall not murder.’ ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ ‘You shall not steal.” (Matthew 19:18) Adultery is the big one nowadays. Whether it’s cheating on a spouse or living together outside of marriage, sexual sin is rampant. Has God changed His mind? Is He fine with this now? Of course not, God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Furthermore, pornography is like adultery. Jesus said that if you look on someone with lust it’s like committing the act. This is adultery in the heart. If you are caught in a trap, Jesus can set you free. Confess your sins to Him and be willing to give them up. Then serve the Lord with all your heart!

“Honor your father and mother.” (Matthew 19:19) Parents have a tough time in our present society. Parental authority is often ridiculed on TV or movies. Children are rebellious and there is not much respect for any authority. However, if you want others to come under your authority, are you under the authority of God? Do you live according to His commands in the Bible? If not, then you are rebellious, too. And children, honor your parents. They deserve love and respect for all they do.

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 19:19) This is the second greatest commandment. It’s not really teaching that we need to love ourselves. It’s assuming we already love ourselves and we need to love others just as much as we already love ourselves. Think about it. Aren’t people usually selfish, self-centered, and looking out for themselves? That’s why Jesus says love your neighbor like that! If you do, then you won’t be so self-centered for you will esteem others better than yourself. This is not just a feeling but action. Therefore, by your actions show you that love others even more than you love yourself!

“The young man said to him, “All these things I have observed from my youth. What do I still lack?” (Matthew 19:20) This young man believed in God and he was a good person. But he met Jesus Christ and he knew something was missing! What was he lacking? He did not have eternal life. What kept Him from entering the Kingdom and experiencing God? It was his lack of commitment! The young man was not willing to surrender his life and follow Jesus Christ. Did you know that one of the meanings of Bible faith is commitment? Have you made a full commitment to Jesus Christ? Is He Lord of your life? If not, make your commitment to Christ today, and then live for Him and His Kingdom everyday. Real faith means real commitment, and real commitment to Christ means eternal life!

“But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sad, for he was one who had great possessions.” (Matthew 19:22) What is keeping you from totally following Christ? Is it money? People? Fear of what He may require? Don’t go away sad. Whatever the cost, it is worth it to follow Jesus. Only He has the words of eternal life!

“So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, don’t let man tear apart.” (Matthew 19:6) We live in a time where divorce is rampant.

Jesus said, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26) Let’s face it human beings are weak. There are so many things we can’t do on our own. What about you? Are you facing impossibilities today? Problems with no solutions. Situations with no hope. Then rejoice, because with God all things are possible! The Lord is a God of power and miracles. Nothing is too hard for Him. Seek His face. Call upon His name. Turn to Him with all your heart and trust in the Lord. He will not forsake the ones who love and follow Him.

“Then Peter answered, Behold, we have left everything, and followed you. What then will we get?” (Matthew 19:27) Selfish question, wasn’t it? We should ask ourselves, why do we follow Jesus? Are we just trying to get something from Him. To commit our whole life to Christ is the only right thing to do. Jesus Christ is the Creator who made us. He gave us life. Furthermore, He died on the cross for our sins and Jesus loves us with an everlasting love. However, even if He never gave us a thing we should still serve Him because Jesus Christ is the only true and living God!

“Everyone who has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive one hundred times, and will inherit eternal life.” (Matthew 19:29) Is it worth it to follow Jesus? He asks us to be willing to give up everything to follow Him. The rewards are greater than you could ever imagine.
Many blessings in this life but the greatest reward of all is eternal life in the world to come!

“But many who are first will be last; and the last will be first.” (Matthew 19:30) God is not impressed with money, fame, or position. This verse teaches us that those who are important, rich, or famous in this life might be the least important in the next. Furthermore, the poor, insignificant, and those lightly esteemed in this life could be the most important in the next. What makes the difference? Being a faithful servant of the Lord. If we are faithful in the small things God will make us ruler over many.

“For many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matthew 20:16) God is calling people, but many aren’t listening. Even for those who listen, many will not be chosen. Because it’s not enough just to listen, we must obey the Lord. We must serve Jesus Christ. It is a deception to think that hearing a sermon or knowing the Bible is enough. God says to be doers of the word not just hearers only. In Revelation, those who are with Jesus Christ are called and chosen but also faithful servants. We must obey.

“It shall not be so among you, but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26) Foolish disciples, arguing about who was the greatest. Jesus was about to go to the cross and He is the greatest. To be a great person we must learn to serve others. Ruling over others does not make you great. To help and serve others is true greatness. Jesus Christ is the greatest of all because He became a servant and gave His life for us!

“Behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, Lord, have mercy on us, son of David!” (Matthew 20:30) We need to understand that “Son of David” was a reference to the Jewish Messiah. The blind men were indicating that they believed Jesus was the promised Messiah. They cried out to Him and they were healed. Do you believe Jesus Christ is God’s promised Messiah? Then cry out to Jesus, the Son of David, and He can help you, too.

“The multitude rebuked them, telling them that they should be quiet, but they cried out even more, Lord, have mercy on us, son of David!” (Matthew 20:31) Sometimes, people are detrimental to our faith. They discourage us from believing, crying out to God, or standing on the promises. So, don’t listen to people if they are contradicting the word of God or if they are bringing a negative report of what God can do. Cry out more. Spend time with Jesus. Pour out your heart and be sincere. The blind men did not listen to the other people but they cried out even more and received their healing!

“Jesus stood still, and called them, and asked, What do you want me to do for you?” (Matthew 20:32) What do you want Jesus to do for you? It helps to clarify in your mind exactly what you would like the Lord to do. Don’t be too general. Be specific and ask the Lord Jesus for what you need. Then you will know as He answers the prayer for that specific situation. You will see that it’s no coincidence- Jesus answers prayer today!

“They told him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.” (Matthew 20:33) The blind men asked to be healed but this is a good prayer even if you are not physically blind. Lord Jesus, open our eyes to understand the Bible. Open our eyes to understand your wisdom. Open our eyes to see what is really important. Open our eyes to eternity, life and death, heaven and hell. Lord, open our eyes to see this world is only temporary and that loving and following Jesus is what really matters.

“Jesus, being moved with compassion, touched their eyes; and immediately their eyes received their sight, and they followed him.” (Matthew 20:34) The Lord has such great compassion. He loves us so much. When He looks at suffering humanity, He wants to help. Jesus is moved over your situation today. Why don’t you ask for His help? Then trust in Him and do what He says.

“Go into the village that is opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them, and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and immediately he will send them.” (Matthew 21:2-3) It was enough for the disciples to say to the owner of the donkey, the Lord needs it. Think about it. Why should we give of our finances to God? Because the Lord needs it. Why should we go to church? Because the Lord needs people. Why should we tell others about Christ? Because the Lord needs us to. Why should we dedicate our lives to His Kingdom? Because Jesus needs committed people. For everything He asks of us, it is enough to know, the Lord has need of it.

“Tell the daughter of Zion, behold, your King comes to you, humble, and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Matthew 21:5) Why did so many miss the Messiah when He came? Because it was different then what they imagined it would be. Jesus was the King, but He came as a humble carpenter. They wanted a conquering king to destroy their human enemies but instead Jesus conquered the greatest enemies of all- sin, death, and the devil. However, when Christ returns next time, He will come as the mighty King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Every force against Him will be destroyed and every foe defeated. He will not be crucified again. Every knee will bow to Him and every tongue wii confess that “Jesus Christ is Lord”.

“The disciples went, and did just as Jesus commanded them.” (Matthew 21:6) What is a disciple? The word means a follower of Christ. It was the first word used for believers many years before the word Christian ever became popular. Many today think they are Christians, but the question is are they really following Jesus Christ. To be a disciple means to have a relationship by spending time with the teacher, studying and learning from the teacher, and obeying and put into practice His teachings. This would disqualify many who only give Jesus lip service. His disciples did as Jesus commanded them!

“When he had come into Jerusalem, all the city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” (Matthew 21:10) Jerusalem was in an uproar. Who was this “King” riding upon a donkey? Could it be the Messiah? This is the big question today. Who is Jesus? Who do you think He is? Is He just a prophet, a great teacher or one of many great religious leaders in history? Or is He the Son of the living God who came to earth to save mankind, died for our sins, rose from the dead, and is coming back again to rule and reign forever? Is He the Christ that deserves your love, adoration, and loyal service? Your answer to this question will determine your eternal destiny.

“Jesus entered into the temple of God, and drove out all of those who sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the money changers’ tables and the seats of those who sold the doves.” (Matthew 21:12) Sometimes we have a picture in our minds of Jesus being very meek and soft spoken. But notice, He could get upset. The people had perverted the church, turning it into a money making machine instead of the House of God. The Lord was not happy. What about today? Have people turned church into something it should not be? Just money making machines or social clubs existing for their pleasure and benefit? Never forget, the church is the House of God, and it exists for His pleasure and glory!

“He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers!” (Matthew 21:13) What should be the distinguishing mark of the church? It should be a house of prayer. Prayer should be priority in the churches and the most important thing we do. We have so many things going on in churches today but prayer should be at the forefront. Then the Lord can bless what we are doing. The world needs to know that Christians pray and furthermore we can get answers to our prayers. They should know where to turn in a crisis. God’s house shall be called a house of prayer.

“The blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them.” (Matthew 21:14) When Christ cleaned out the Temple miracles happened. Today, when we get our priorities right God can do great things in our lives. Churches need to focus on God and make His house a place of prayer. As individuals we need priorities also. Our relationship with Christ should be the most important thing in our life. Prayer, Bible reading, and spending time with Jesus should be the foundation of our life. Getting closer to Him and knowing Him should be our goal. Loving and obeying Jesus should be our reason for living.

“But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children who were crying in the temple and saying, “Hosanna to the son of David!” they were indignant” (Matthew 21:15) Notice the progression here. First Jesus cleans out the temple. Second, He makes it a place of prayer. Third, miracles happen and the power of God is released. Fourth, praise is given to God. This is the same pattern today. Those who were religious hypocrites but not right with God did not like what the Lord did. The lesson for us is that those who are not living right should not pretend to be serving Jesus. Let Jesus clean out your life. Become a person of prayer. Then Jesus can do great and mighty things.

“Now in the morning, as He returned to the city, He was hungry.” (Matthew 21:18) The Lord Jesus was perfect man and perfect God. And though He was God incarnate, yet He laid aside some of His divine attributes, so He could become human. Jesus became hungry. He knew what it was to be tempted. He grew weary. He felt the nails and the pain of the cross. He became a man so He could die for us and save us from our sins. What a wonderful Savior He is. I love you Jesus! Thank you Savior for all you’ve done!

“Seeing a fig tree by the road, he came to it, and found nothing on it but leaves. He said to it, Let there be no fruit from you forever! Immediately the fig tree withered away.” (Matthew 21:19) Jesus came to the fig tree but there were no figs! If you’re like me, you want some fruit or vegetables from your garden and it’s the same with the Lord. How about it. Is there any fruit in your life for God? Any changes in your character to make you more like Christ? Any other lives touched for the Lord through you? Any good things coming out of your life because you love the Lord? Let our lives be filled with much fruit that will bring glory to God.

“Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, if you have faith, and don’t doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you told this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it would be done.” (Matthew 21:21) What power there is in faith. People say “I have my faith” but notice it’s not just a generic faith. This is faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. It is faith in the Bible as the word of God. It is faith in the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ as the Lord God Almighty. When you are following the Lord, doing what He wants, and living for Him, then this verse is for you. You can speak for His glory and it will happen. This is mountain moving faith!

“All things, whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” (Matthew 21:22) Sometimes we may wonder when our prayers don’t seem to get answered. God has promised to answer but there are things we must do. We must not allow any sin in our heart or life. Also, we must have faith when we pray. A great way to pray in faith is to find a promise from God in the Bible and fulfill the conditions of that promise. It’s easy to believe because we have the Lord’s promise and we know He wants to do it. Then we can pray and really have faith for the Lord will never forget His promises and we shall surely receive!

“When He had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him as He was teaching, and said, “By what authority do you do these things?” (Matthew 21:23) The Pharisees thought they were the authorities. They liked being in charge. Christ challenged their authority with the authority of God. Jesus was doing His Father’s will. By the way, which authority are you following: man, religion, or perhaps, your own? Jesus Christ is Lord and He is the final authority. The question for everyone is, will you submit to His Lordship?

“A man had two sons, and he came to the first, and said, ‘Son, go work today in my vineyard.’ He answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind, and went. He came to the second, and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but he didn’t go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” (Matthew 21:28-31) Let’s face it- talk is cheap. The one son said he would obey but he didn’t. The other said he wouldn’t but changed his mind and did it. Jesus is showing us that the bottom line is not what we say but what we do! We must do more than just say we are Christians. We must obey God. Many will never make it into the Kingdom of God because they talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. The good news is, that if you haven’t been doing the Father’s will so far you can start now.

“Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures, ‘The stone which the builders rejected, the same was made the head of the corner. This was from the Lord. It is marvelous in our eyes?” (Matthew 21:42) What an amazing scripture foretelling how the leaders would reject Christ when He came. Jesus is the foundation stone but they didn’t want Him. He is the promised Messiah they said they were looking for and they didn’t see it. Too bad they didn’t understand this verse. We need to read the Bible today to understand the truth about God. Many people have wrong ideas about what God is really like. Often it’s because they are ignorant of God’s word. They are ignorant of righteousness, repentance, and judgment to come. They don’t really understand that salvation isn’t a one time experience, it’s a living relationship with Christ that is day by day seeking Him and living for Him. False ideas can send a person to hell. But there is no excuse since Bibles are so available in our country. Like Jesus said, did you never read in the scriptures?

“Therefore I tell you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and will be given to a nation bringing forth its fruit.” (Matthew 21:43) Are you bringing forth fruit for God? Have you truly repented of your sins and are you living for Jesus? If not, don’t fool yourself into thinking that everything is fine. We must have good fruit coming out of our lives. We must have love, faithfulness, and obedience to Christ. We must have good works toward our fellow man and we must follow the Bible. Faith without works is dead. A person that says they believe in Jesus but does not live for Christ will have the Kingdom taken from them.

“He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but on whoever it will fall, it will scatter him as dust.” (Matthew 21:44) To reject Jesus is the worst decision a person could ever make. The Lord gives us a choice. We are human beings with a free will. You can fall upon Jesus in humility and brokeness, confessing your sins, and turning your life around or the end will come and judgment will fall upon you. Those who reject Christ will be crushed and destroyed. It’s so obvious as to what is the best choice. Please give your life to Jesus Christ, the One who loves you, made you, and died for you!

“When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that He spoke about them.” (Matthew 21:45) Why don’t some people want to read the Bible? Because it’s talking about them! God is speaking through His word. Those who don’t like the Bible have a problem with God. Usually, it’s because they don’t want to give Christ control. Unfortunately, this results in disaster. However, the Bible offers hope, peace, and eternal life to those who will listen. It’s important to find out what God is saying. So read, study, listen to sermons, and learn about the Bible. It’s speaking to us today!

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain king, who made a marriage feast for his son, and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast, but they would not come.” (Matthew 22:2-3) In this parable, the King is God the Father and the Son is Jesus Christ. There is a great celebration coming soon. Jesus Christ will return to earth and set up His eternal Kingdom. There will be a great feast. Everyone is invited, but are you ready? Most people think they are going to heaven someday, but the Bible says the way to Heaven is narrow and few will find it. You see, the issue is not whether you want to go to Heaven someday, it is a decision to live for Christ now!

“Again he sent out other servants, saying, Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner. All things are ready. Come to the marriage feast! But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise.” (Matthew 22:4-5) When Jesus comes back again there will be an awesome marriage supper for Christ and His Bride, which includes all true Christians. What a glorious celebration that will be. But many are not ready. We must tell them the Bridegroom is coming soon! Look around at the Middle East and see that day is approaching. We must do all we can to reach them now. A commitment to Christ is a lot like a marriage. You desire Jesus Christ and decide you want to spend the rest of your life in a beautiful relationship with Him. You accept Christ as your Lord and Savior and you love Him and serve Him. God is asking people today, will you come to Jesus now and give your whole life to Him? Will you live your life in honor and obedience to Christ? Those that will are ready for His return.

“When the king heard that, he was angry, and sent his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.” (Matthew 22:7) God is very loving and wants everyone to be saved. However, for those who reject His mercy and will not submit to His Kingship there is destruction up ahead. Jesus will return and bring deliverance to His people but judgment will come on those who have rebelled against Him. God can get angry and His forgiveness cannot reach those who refuse to submit to Jesus Christ. The crucial issue is whether we will obey God and His word.

“Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited weren’t worthy. Go therefore to the intersections of the highways, and as many as you may find, invite to the marriage feast.” (Matthew 22:8-9) Jesus loves you and wants everyone to be saved. But those who refuse to accept Christ and make Him Lord will be rejected. They will not be at the Heavenly feast. The Lord wants people to come, so we must go out into this world and invite others to come to Christ. God loves the world and we must tell everyone the good news of Christ. We should invite them to church and tell them to get ready for the Lord Jesus Christ is coming back soon!

“Those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together as many as they found, both bad and good. The wedding was filled with guests.” (Matthew 22:10) Although multitudes won’t make it to Heaven, there are many who will. As God’s servants spread the gospel many people from all nations will respond and turn to Christ. The wedding will be full. Notice they will be “good and bad”. It doesn’t matter how bad you are if you will turn to Christ, repent of your sins, and make Jesus Lord of your life you will be saved. Some of the most wicked sinners will be in Heaven because they have turned to Christ. Also, it doesn’t matter how good you are, you need Christ for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Some good, outstanding citizens, and “nice” people will not be in Heaven because they have refused Christ. As servants of Jesus Christ, we must get as many people as we can to the wedding.

“And He said to him, friend, how did you come in here not wearing wedding clothing?” Matthew 22:12) Are you ready for the wedding? You see, Jesus Christ is coming for His bride. His bride will be the ones who love Jesus, have committed their all to Him, and have chosen to serve Him forever. They want to be with Christ. They want to be married and be with Him for all eternity. Do you feel that way? Do you desire Jesus now? Do you want to be in His house, read His words, and get closer to Him? If not, then you don’t have your wedding clothes on. It’s time to get ready!

“Then the king said to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness; there is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.” (Matthew 22:13) People mock the Bible. They think hell is just a joke and there’s no such place. Listen, the Bible teaches that hell is real! Jesus Christ mentioned it many times and spoke of it as a real place. Why? Because Jesus doesn’t want anyone to go there! The Lord Jesus died for our sins so we that we could be forgiven and go to heaven. Everyone has a choice. Jesus Christ said if we follow Him we will have eternal life but those who fail to accept Christ will be lost forever.

“For many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matthew 22:14) God is calling multitudes today, but many are not listening. He is calling people to turn from their sins, to give their lives to Christ, and to live for God. They won’t be chosen unless they surrender all to Jesus Christ. They must be faithful to obey and continue to serve Him. If you are a good and faithful servant, then you can be chosen. I want Jesus to choose me, don’t you? Many are being called, but who will be chosen?

“Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” (Matthew 22:17) God has something to say about this. The Bible teaches us to be good citizens, to honor and pray for our leaders, and to keep the laws of the land. Yes, we should pay taxes. Jesus said so. Furthermore, if you are a Christian you should aim to be the best employee, the best student, the best citizen, and the best person possible. This means you should be the most reliable, honest, industrious, and wholesome person you can be. Strive for moral purity, good speech, and clean living. For this is how we let our light shine in a dark and sinful world.

“On that day Sadducees (those who say that there is no resurrection) came to Him.” (Matthew 22:23) Have you eve wondered what happens after this life is over? Unfortunately, there are modern philosophies that deny heaven and rob people of the hope that is coming. They say that this life is all there is. They are wrong! The Saducees in Jesus’ day were the same way. They didn’t believe in miracles or an afterlife. They were the skeptics of their day. However, God’s word is true. There is a Heaven to gain and a Hell to shun. Jesus spoke of eternal life to those who would follow Him. Thank God, this is not the end! There is eternity ahead.

“But Jesus answered them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.” (Matthew 22:29) Why are people so mixed up and confused? Why are there so many incorrect ideas about God? Because people don’t know the Bible! They are mistaken because they don’t know the Scriptures. The bottom line is not what some human being thinks or what my church believes, but what does God think. We will be judged by what is written in God’s word, the Bible. It would be very wise to learn what the Bible teaches and to do what it says.

“But Jesus answered them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.” (Matthew 22:29) There is something else that keeps people confused and mistaken. It’s when they don’t know the power of God. Some teach that the Lord doesn’t do powerful things anymore. The Bible says that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Jesus still saves, heals, and sets people free. Jesus Christ has all the power in heaven and in earth and miracles are for today. His power is available to His people as they pray and believe. Nothing is impossible with God!

‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” (Matthew 22:32) What about the people who have gone before us, those who have trusted and served Jesus Christ, and passed from this earth? My friends, they are alive right now! We may sorrow because we miss them but if they were saved, they are in a much better place. Won’t it be amazing to see Abraham, Moses, Noah, and Paul in Heaven? God is not a God of the dead, He is a God of the living. Those who believe in and follow Jesus will not perish but have everlasitng life!

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law? Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:36-37) How has religion gotten so far off track? For many it has degenerated into meaningless little rituals and boring traditions of men. No wonder people are turned off by it. Don’t miss the point. The point is to love Jesus! Futhermore, we are to love Him with all our being and to the utmost our our ability. It really isn’t hard to love the Lord considering all He has done for us. Jesus Christ died on the cross to save us from eternal death and destruction. Jesus blesses, provides, protects and cares. He is so good. And don’t forget, when you truly love Him you should obey Him.

“A second likewise is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39) To love our neighbor is the second greatest commandment. Jesus taught that all people in need are our neighbors. Loving others is very important and love must have action. We should do all we can to help, care for, and bless others. The extent of this love is to be the same way as we love ourselves. Isn’t it amazing the Bible teaches love when so much of the world and so many religions are full of hate? I’m glad I’m a Christian.

“All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.” (Matthew 23:3) Here we see the Lord coming against the religious hypocrisy of His day. Jesus had many scathing remarks for the Pharisees. Why? Because they were religious leaders and they were leading people astray. This show us that just because someone is a pastor, priest, or TV preacher doesn’t mean the Lord approves of them. We should ask, are they truly preaching the Bible? Also, are they living what they say they believe? For that matter, what about us, are we truly living the Christian life or just speaking the right words? If we say and don’t do, the Lord will consider us hypocrites also.

“But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad, enlarge the fringes of their garments, and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues.” (Matthew 23:5-6) Here we notice another problem the religious leaders had. They wanted to impress people and were puffed up in pride. They loved to get the attention and applause of men. All these things are disgusting to the One who humbled Himself and died on the cross. Jesus Christ is the greatest example of all. He did not live to please man but to please His heavenly Father. What about church leaders today? We too must live as Christ, by living to please God and not to impress people.

“But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.” (Matthew 23:11) Generally, people like to be important, wealthy, and ruling over others. In human minds, these are the great people. However, the Lord Jesus gave us a whole new set of guidelines. He said the greatest person is the one who serves others. What a contrast! It’s not the high and mighty who get waited upon but it’s the ones who love, serve, and help others that are greater. Christ is the greatest of all because He became a servant and gave His life on the cross.

“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:12) The Bible has a lot to say about humility. Jesus is showing in this verse that proud people will be brought low. Those who are proud and want to be seen by others will be humbled instead. Pride is evil and wrong as it exalts man and does not recognize that everything we have is from God. God blesses the humble person who depends upon the Lord and gives Him all the credit.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.” (Matthew 23:13) Most people in America say they pray sometimes. This doesn’t mean a person is really a Christian or right with God. Jesus said a person must be born-again. A person must turn from their sins and put their trust in Jesus Christ to save them. They must pray and call upon the Lord Jesus, submitting their will and giving Christ their life. The Pharisees acted religious but Christ saw right through their acting. We cannot fool God. Let your prayers be sincere and from your heart. Become one who loves and follows Christ. Prayer is good but only if we have a life that lives for Jesus.

“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter.” (Matthew 23:14) This is a nasty thing. Some of those in religious leadership were keeping others from getting in touch with God. Can’t we see that just because a place is called a church it doesn’t mean it’s from God? It doesn’t mean every minister or church leader is actually helping people. They may be leading others to hell. The sad fact is, that many people don’t want to hear the truth, so they find churches where the Bible is watered down or explained away. May the Lord raise up churches and leaders today who will proclaim the truth no matter how popular it is!

“You blind fools!” (Matthew 23:19) What a sermon. Not too many would like to be in that church but these are the words of Jesus. You see if people are not willing to accept Christ and obey Him they are blinded. It’s very foolish to not believe the Bible. It’s very foolish to ignore God’s warnings and it’s very foolish to think lightly of where you will spend eternity. When we turn away from God’s truth we will be blinded. These religious people thought they were with God but their stubborness and pride kept them from seeing. Don’t be blinded. Let Jesus search your heart and show you what you need to change and how you can better live for Him.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone. (Matthew 23:23) Do you follow certain things in the Bible but ignore the rest? Are you thinking that what you do is good enough? We cannot pick and choose what parts we want to obey. The Pharisees were faithful in giving their money but they were missing some very important things. The Lord wants us to strive to flollow the Bible to the best of our ability in every area! Are you doing some good things? That’s wonderful, but don’t leave the other things undone.

“You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!” (Matthew 23:24) Isn’t it amazing how people have their little rules and miss the really important things. They strain out a little gnat but swallow a huge camel. Notice all the bickering, backbiting, and fighting in many churches. Where is the love for other people? Where is the passion for Jesus? Where are the changed lives that reflect the character of Christ? Perhaps we are majoring on the minors and missing the camels! Frankly, there is too much fluffy preaching nowadays and it is producing immature babies. We need to get back to the major topics of God’s word like repentance, holiness, denying yourself and total commitment to Christ for it will produce strong, healthy Christians.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within you are full of extortion and unrighteousness.” (Matthew 23:25) Here Jesus Christ exposes another religious deception. It’s not enough to look good on the outside. The Lord is searching the hearts. He is looking at our attitudes, thoughts, and the inner motives of our hearts. A person can look good on the outside but be full of garbage on the inside. You could look like a movie star and still be proud, selfish, and mean. True beauty is a person with a sweet, gentle spirit that is always kind and cares for others more that themselves.

“You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.” (Matthew 23:26) This is the proper order. Don’t just clean up your act a little. You must be changed on the inside. Let Jesus Christ come into your heart and life. Let Him transform you. Be a new and different person in all the ways you think and act. Jesus has changed millions of people for the better. He can tranform anyone if they will let Him. When you are different on the inside, it will reflect on the outside. Let’s pray together: Lord Jesus, come in today and change my life. Change my thoughts and desires. Live in me and through me. Help me to become more like You. Amen.

“You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Hell?” (Matthew 23:33) I’ve never heard a TV preacher speak these words, have you? I suppose no one would send in their money if they did. But Hell is real and the Lord Jesus doesn’t want anyone to go there. Thankfully, there is a way to escape the judgment of Hell. Make no mistake about it, some other religions may have some nice thoughts about life but Jesus Christ is the only way! There is no other Savior. Through His death and resurrection we can be saved if we put our trust in Jesus Christ, call upon His name, and make Him Lord of our lives. After we do this, then our job is to tell others and help them escape from the judgment of Hell also.

“Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city” (Matthew 23:34) Those who are truly speaking for God are usually not well received. But why is it that so many don’t want to hear the truth? Because they are uncomfortable when confronted with their sin! You see, it is a false teaching that people can live in sin and still go to Heaven. A man centered, feel-good message doesn’t offend anyone but Jesus said repent or you will perish. Sadly, this type of preaching is missing in many places. It might not be popular but where are the real prophets today?

“How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!” (Matthew 23:37) The Lord Jesus wept over Jerusalem. He desired to help, protect, and care for them. The picture is of a loving hen caring for her chicks. The Lord desires to help people but many won’t respond. He loves them and wants to care for them but they won’t listen. They don’t want to be chicks they want to be the hen and they refuse to submit to the Lordship of Jesus. If we won’t respond to Jesus, then He can’t help us. But is we do respond we will find ourselves surrounded by His wings and under His loving care.

“For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matthew 23:39) Many of the precious Jewish people do not understand that Jesus Christ is the Messiah they are waiting for. Israel is surrounded by enemies and war is always lurking around the corner. However, the time will come when their eyes will be opened and they will joyfully respond to the coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus will return and save them from their enemies. They will say, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“As He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3) Make no mistake about it. There are quite a few signs that point to the soon return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Many signs are taking place right now. For example: There are wars and rumors of war, famines, disease, earthquakes, false prophets, and persecution of believers. Althought these things have happened in the past, they are increasing in amount and intensity. This means we’re getting closer. What a day that will be. The wicked will be punished and those who love and serve Christ will be with Him forever. Hallelujah! Come Lord Jesus, come!

“Jesus answered them, Be careful that no one leads you astray.” (Matthew 24:4) There are many false ideas going around today. People are being led astray. How can we tell what is really true? By comparing everything to the Bible. Does what this preacher, prophet, book, or person say line up with the word of God? If not, they are wrong and their teaching is false doctrine. Be careful of deception for it will be strong in the last days. Stay close to Jesus, learn the Bible, and obey the Lord’s commands then you will not be led astray.

“Because iniquity will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12) Sin is rampant all around us. As people get farther from God and the Bible, they sink deeper and deeper into the quagmire of disgust. TV and movies spill out filth and evil flaunts itself against all that is good and right and holy. Truly sin is abounding. Christ is talking about the last days before His return. He said for many their love would grow cold. We see it today. Many are turning away from God, the churches, and the Bible. Sin in the world has affected their lives. They do not love Jesus like they used to! This is a sign of the end. The question is, do you love Him more today than ever before or are you slipping away?

“But he who endures to the end, the same will be saved.” (Matthew 24:13) There can be no doubt that God wants to save us. However, the scripture tells us that many will follow the road to destruction and that few will find eternal life. Why is that? Because many won’t endure to the end. They may start well and serve the Lord for awhile but then the devil tricks them and they go back into sin. Christianity is a marathon not a sprint. We must serve the Lord faithfully, keep going, and endure unto the end if we want to be saved.

“This Good News of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14) The Lord is interested in the whole world. Every tribe, tongue and people are precious in His eyes. The good news of Jesus is going forth now. Through radio, TV, internet, books, tracts, missions and many other ways the gospel is going out to the world. Jesus said that this would happen. Let’s pray that doors may open and that many more can hear and saved. Pray for the Middle East and the troubled countries of the world. Pray for the USA. Pray for your world and tell others about Christ. Everybody needs Jesus!

“For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever will be.” (Matthew 24:21) The world has so much turmoil in it. Wars, famine, disease, and disasters. But there is coming a time that will be a million times worse. It’s called “The Great Tribulation”. It will make today’s problems seem like a summer picnic. What should you do? Get as close to Jesus as you can right now. Serve Him will all your might. The Bible says to pray that you can escape these things. Jesus Christ is returning and He will take His people off the earth. Until that day He will protect and provide for you if you live for Jesus and obey His words.

“For there will arise false christs and false prophets and they will show great signs and wonders, so to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones.” (Matthew 24:24) There will be strong deceptions in the last days. There will be lying spirits telling people that they can live in sin and still be saved. Many will be deceived. We can already see many people have fallen away from the Lord. They are backslidden and they are in grave danger. The only safe place to be is walking close to Christ safe in the loving arms of the Savior. Even those who are dedicated Christians will have to be very careful. This is no time to be slothful. Live for Jesus with all your might and get as close to Christ as you can. Don’t be led astray!

“Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.” (Matthew 24:30) Jesus Christ is coming again! This is one of the greatest truths of the Bible. Jesus died on the cross and returned to Heaven but He is coming again. His return is the only hope for this world. When Jesus comes back evil will be defeated and He will set up His eternal Kingdom. Then all wars will cease. There will be peace and prosperity. Christ is truly the hope of the world.

“He will send out his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.” (Matthew 24:31) When Christ returns He will gather His people, the true Christians, from all over the world. We will meet Him in the air. What a day that will be. We’ll see the Lord Jesus face to face and be with Him forever. My friends, it doesn’t get any better then this. Does anything else compare? You can have this whole world but give me Jesus!

“Even so you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.” (Matthew 24:33) People like to think that they have lots of time. They imagine they’ll live a long life. However, reality is that no one knows when the Lord will return or their time is up. It may be sooner or later but it will happen. Can you see the signs in the earth today? Many signs are happening that were predicted in the Bible to occur shortly before the Lord’s return. Don’t put your head in the sand. Christ is coming. It’s time to get ready!

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” (Matthew 24:35) The Bible has taken alot of attacks but it is still standing. Kings and governments have tried to erase it but to no avail. Sceptics have mocked and the foolish have ridiculed it. However, the Bible is still the best selling book in the world. Why? Because it is the word of God. It brings comfort, peace, and hope to mankind. It is the truth that sets men free and the food that feeds our souls. One day this world will pass away but the words of Jesus will never pass away. You can put your trust and faith into the eternal word of the living God.

“But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” (Matthew 24:36) The Bible specifically states that no one knows the time of Christ’s return. Why then do people set dates? It only makes them look foolish. The fact that they don’t know actually proves the Bible was right. However, there are signs that point to the nearness of Christ’s return, so that we can know that it is close. We may not know exactly but we can see it getting close. Seriously, can the world last much longer? There are many signs right now. It’s time to get prepared if you’re not ready. Everything is pointing to the fact that Jesus is coming soon!

“As the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” (Matthew 24:37) What was is like in the days of Noah. Violence covered the earth. Watch the news, does this seem similar to our time now? Also, people were unaware that something was about to happen. They were going about their lives not knowing that soon it would all be over. What about us today? Do we realize that Christ is returning? Can we tell by the many events in our world that His return could be very near? Even if Jesus doesn’t come back for awhile our lives our short and could end at any time. Notice the earthquake and tsunami victims. They had no clue that their lives were about to end that day. Are you ready to meet the Lord? Are you living for Jesus and following His commands? He’s coming again and it’s time to get ready!

“Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and one will be left; two women will be grinding at the mill, one will be taken and one will be left.” (Matthew 24:40-41) When Christ returns people will be suddenly gone! Jesus will take His servants to be with Him. This is called the rapture. Two will be working and one will be gone. Two will be at home and one will be gone. Jesus knows those who are true Christians. No one can pretend or fool Him. Christ will take those who are truly His to be with Him forever.

“Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten young ladies, who took their lamps, and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.” (Matthew 25:1-2) Most people think they are going to Heaven. Unfortunately, many are foolish. They think because they mentally believed in Christ that they are fine. Notice however, that the wise ones are prepared! They are looking for His coming. They are good, faithful, obedient servants of Jesus Christ. The foolish ones didn’t care that much. They were slothful in their relationship with God. They thought they would get in at the end but the door was shut and it was too late. My friends, now is the day of salvation. Now is the time to forsake your sins and live for Christ. Now is the time to faithfully go to church, work for the Lord, and give your time and money to the cause of Christ. How about it, are you wise or foolish? Soon it will too late.

“Now after a long time the lord of those servants came, and reconciled accounts with them.” (Matthew 25:19) The Lord Jesus Christ will return to earth. When He does it will be a time of accounting. Those who are not serving Jesus will be punished. Every Christian will have to give an account of how we have used our time, money, and resources for His Kingdom. There will be no excuses. Christ will accurately and fairly judge. Wickedness and slothfulness will be revealed. It is best to live for Christ now and do all we can for His Kingdom. There will be great rewards for those who have faithfully served Jesus Christ.

“His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ (Matthew 25:21) When Jesus returns He will judge you on your goodness and faithfulness. Concerning goodness, are you living a righteous and godly life? Are you obeying the word of God and doing your best to forsake sin and to do what’s right? Concerning faithfulness, do you faithfully read the Bible and do what it says? Do you faithfully attend church and give financially to the Lord? Do you tell others about Christ and pray everyday? Would Jesus consider you a faithful servant? Those who are good and faithful will go to be with Jesus and live in the joys of Heaven forever!

“Throw out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 25:30) Notice the person in the parable is a servant. He’s not an atheist. Here’s a person who is considered a Christian. He is supposed to be serving the Lord but he did not use what the Lord had given him. We could say he basically did not use his time, money, or resources for Jesus. He was not useful or of little value. Therefore, he was unprofitable. Outer darkness is a picture of hell and eternal punishment. This is a strong teaching from the Lord Jesus. The meaning here is that we can say we are Christians but if we are not obeying Jesus and living for Him we are unprofitable servants. A wise person will fear the Lord and strive to live for Him.

“But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.” (Matthew 25:31) When Jesus said this, He was talking about Himself. He is the Son of Man, which is a title of the Messiah in the Old Testament. As you can see there are many verses referring to the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus will come back along with His angels and He will sit on His throne. From there He will judge and rule the world. Finally, all will know that Jesus Christ is the true Lord and God of the universe!

“Before Him all the nations will be gathered, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.” (Matthew 25:32) There will be judgment at the end of the world and Christ will be the judge. Jesus knows the sheep that belong to Him so the wicked will be separated from the righteous. Then the wicked will be punished and the righteous will be rewarded. Following the Good Shepherd now means you can be His sheep for all eternity!

“Then the King will tell those on his right hand, ‘Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” (Matthew 25:34) There is an eternal Kingdom coming. We call it Heaven. Those who are Christ’s sheep will inherit that Kingdom. You see, it does pay to serve the Lord. There is life after death and Heaven is a million times better than anything here on earth.

“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:40) Jesus is identifying Himself with His people. He says the way we are treating others is the way we are treating Him. If we treat others badly we are doing it to Jesus and if we treat them good we are treating Jesus good. Obviously, we must be careful how we treat others and we must be careful to do good things for others. Christ will judge us on this.

“Then he will say also to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41) In our day and age it is not popular to talk about Hell. However, it is a real place just like Heaven. The Lord spoke of it because He doesn’t want anyone to go there. Hell was made for the devil and his angels. Those who reject Christ and live sinful lives will not be in Heaven and there are only two destinations. Some may ask where can Hell be found? It can be found at the end of a life without Christ. Ah but Heaven- I wouldn’t miss it for the world!

“These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Matthew 25:46) Again, I repeat, Jesus Christ is coming again. There will be a judgment for every person who has ever lived. Those who have trusted in Jesus Christ and lived for Him will enter into eternal life. Those who have rejected Christ and lived for self will enter into eternal punishment. There is no middle of the road here. Are you living for Jesus Christ or not? That is the most important decision you can ever make. We are talking about eternity here. Nothing in this world is as important as your eternal soul.

“You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” (Matthew 26:2) The Lord Jesus knows the future. He told His disciples in advance that He would have to be crucified. It was no accident. Jesus Christ chose to die for the sins of the world. He loved us and gave Himself for us. What an awesome Savior! There is no one like Jesus. If we truly understand His love, who wouldn’t want to follow Him?

“A woman came to him having an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table. But when his disciples saw this, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste?’ (Matthew 26:7-8) Here is one who listened to Jesus and responded. She loved the One who was giving His life for her. So she poured out the expensive perfume out on Christ. The others thought it was a waste. Let me ask you, are you pouring out your life for Jesus? If a person is truly commited to Christ many people may think it is a waste. After all, you have our own life, don’t you? You don’t want to be too fanatical, do you? Believe me, I can tell you by experience there are very few really pouring out there all on Jesus Christ. I want to be like that woman. What about you?

“Most certainly I tell you, wherever this Good News is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of as a memorial of her.” (Matthew 26:13) She had poured out her expensive perfume on Jesus. It represented alot of money. It did not go unnoticed by God. Listen, whatever you do for Christ is not wasted! People may not notice but Jesus does. There is no greater thing than to give to Jesus. Think about it. What more can you do for Him? All the monuments to man will crumble to dust and be gone but this woman will be remembered forever for her unselfish love and sacrifice for Jesus Christ.

“Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests,
and said, “What are you willing to give me, that I should deliver him to you?” They weighed out for him thirty pieces of silver.” (Matthew 26:14- 15) Judas was a traitor. Amazingly, he had traveled with Christ, saw His miracles, and heard His words. How could he betray the Master? Somehow, the devil got in and tricked him. He became greedy and selfish. Perhaps, he was offended at Jesus. I wonder how many are listening to satan today. Any voice that is leading us away from love and obedience to Jesus Christ is not from God! How could we ever leave the One who loves us so much?

“As they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks for it, and broke it. He gave to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” (Matthew 26:26) Here we have what’s called the Last Supper. It was the last time Jesus ate before He died on the cross. He compared the bread to His body. The bread was broken so they could eat and Jesus body was broken for us. We must partake of Him spiritually. Christ must come to live in our hearts. We must have Him inside, just as bread enters in to give us physical life, Christ enters to give us spiritual life. By the way, outward rituals of religion or communion will not save anyone. Salvation happens inside a person as they trust and surrender to Christ.

“This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins.” (Matthew 26:28) There is power in the precious blood of Jesus. It can save. It can heal. It can cleanse your sins away. It can overcome the devil. This blood represents the new agreement or covenant with mankind. You can have the blessings if you keep your part of the agreement. What is that? Believe in and serve Jesus Christ to the best of your ability. Jesus said if you love me you will obey my commandments. Show the Lord that you appreciate the sacrifice of His blood by loving Him and following His commands.

“When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” (Matthew 26:30) Christianity is the singing religion and believe me we have something to sing about. As a born-again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ we have forgiveness. We have adoption into God’s family. We have peace. We have provision. We have protection and the presence of the Lord! Furthermore we have eternal life with heaven up ahead. There’s a whole lot more but that should give us something to sing about!

“Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.” (Matthew 26:31) Now this is an interesting verse and I think it shows some of the devil’s tactics. Smite the shepherds or in other words get the leaders. Perhaps that’s why so many leaders are falling into sin. Get the shepherd and the sheep will scatter. What should we do? Leaders, you must stay close to Jesus! You must be wary of any temptation and be sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Do not allow any compromise or sin into your lives. And sheep, pray for your leaders, they need it. Support them as best you can. Furthermore, we should all pray “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” We have an enemy but he can be defeated throught the mighty power of Jesus Christ!

“But after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee.” (Matthew 26:32) Jesus knew He would be raised from the dead. What other religion has a teacher or founder that rose from the dead to die no more? Some have been revived after they died, but only to die again at a future date. Jesus Christ rose and is alive forevermore! He knows the future and He has it in His hands. Jesus said to His followers that because He lives they will live also. Ah,…to be with Christ forever in Heaven- what a future and what a hope!

“But Peter answered him, Even if all will be made to stumble because of you, I will never be made to stumble.” (Matthew 26:33) Oh Peter, why were you so proud? The Bible says pride goes before a fall. Soon Peter would deny that he knew Jesus. He thought he was different, better, and stronger than the others. Temptation comes to all of us. Don’t compare to others but look to Jesus. Pray for Him to deliver you from evil. Resist pride for it is a nasty thing. All that we have is from God, so how can we be proud?

“Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you.” All of the disciples also said likewise.” (Matthew 26:35) Big talk but when it came down to it they all ran away! Perhaps we shouldn’t be too hard on them since most of us would do the same thing. But let’s learn the lessons. Don’t be proud and boast, but only boast of the Lord and His strength. Secondly, make the decision to give your life to Christ. Once you’ve decided and you’re living that commitment your life is not your own and nothing can move you. Thirdly, do not deny the Lord, but actively tell others the wonderful news that Jesus loves them, died for them, and wants to save them.

“Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go there and pray.” (Matthew 26:36) If we can say one thing about the life of Jesus Christ it would have to be that He prayed alot! All night, early in the morning or praying and fasting the Lord was always praying. What a contrast to the disciples who fell asleep. Do we want to see God do mighty things in our lives? Surely, we all need to pray more and model our life after our Savior.

“He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and severely troubled.” (Matthew 26:37) Here Jesus is praying before He must face the cross. Jesus knew sorrow and pain. He tasted death for every man. The Bible says He can sympathize. Jesus knows what trials are like because He has been through them. He feels our pain and He cares. Truly, Jesus can understand for He has been there. So, prayer is the key to any problem or trial. Pray because Jesus Christ loves you and He can help you!

“He went forward a little, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.” (Matthew 26:39) Jesus, what commitment to His Father! No matter what it cost or what it would take, Jesus would obey. This should be the prayer for all of His followers. Not what we want but what does the Lord want. In every decision in life surrender to God’s will. He knows what is best and He is Lord.

“He came to the disciples, and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What, couldn’t you watch with me for one hour?” (Matthew 26:40) The Lord wanted His disciples to pray with Him. Instead they fell asleep. I’m afraid many of us are “sleeping” instead of praying. Busy with many things and prayer comes last on the list. May the Lord help us to be spending quality time in prayer and putting spiritual things first on our list!

“Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41) Why do we need to pray? For many reasons. It is the way to receive from God. It is our communication with our Heavenly Father. It gives us peace as we bring our request to God. Here in this verse we learn another reason. Because our flesh is weak! We need God’s strength to overcome temptation. We need His help to live a godly life. We need the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives to do anything substantial for the Lord. Jesus said without me you can do nothing. With Him, however, all things are possible!

“Immediately he came to Jesus, and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and kissed him.” (Matthew 26:49) Judas was a traitor. Yet he had walked with Christ, shared meals with Him, had fireside talks and was a friend of Jesus. How could he betray the Lord? Something got into his heart. Pride, greed, offense? We don’t know for sure but whatever the devil got to Judas and he turned away from following Christ. The Bible says many will turn away in the last days. We must be very careful to stay very close to Jesus, to read His word, be praying, and to stay in fellowship with our church. Otherwise, we too could fall away. That would be tragic. Stay true to Jesus whatever it takes!

“Behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.” (Matthew 26:51) This to me is one of the greatest miracles in the Bible. It certainly is the most gracious. Jesus is being arrested to be executed, yet He stops to heal the ear of one of those who came to arrest Him! What love. What compassion. Truly He was loving to His enemies. What a wonderful Savior. There is no one else like Jesus!

“Or do you think that I couldn’t ask my Father, and he would even now send me more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matthew 26:53) Do you realize Christ did not have to die? He voluntarily gave His life because He loved us. Jesus told the Roman Governor that He could ask God His Father for armies of angels to rescue Him. But Jesus refused to do it. Love took Him to the cross. Love held Him there. How could anybody reject that love? Thank you Jesus for laying down Your life for a sinner like me!

“The high priest answered him, “I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus said to him, “You have said it. ” (Matthew 26:63) Make no mistake about it- Jesus Christ was not confused! He said point blank that He was the Son of God and equal to God the Father. Normally we put people like that in a special institution but Christ was different. He walked on water, healed incurable diseases, and raised people from the dead. Then He Himself came alive from the dead and ascended back to Heaven. I would say Jesus Christ has the proper credentials to prove who He was. Make no mistake about it-for your eternal destiny depends upon it- Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God!

“Then they spit in His face and beat Him with their fists.” (Matthew 26:67) This part of the Bible makes me so sad. They took the Son of God and treated Him horrible. Jesus was in the process of dying for their sins and they didn’t even realize it! Christ was kind, loving, and always helping others. Even when He rebuked people it was for their own good. Don’t spit on Him and reject Him any longer. Jesus deserves all of our honor and respect. He’s more than a great teacher or religious leader. Jesus Christ is the Lord God of the universe! So the question for all is, do you believe that He is Lord and have you made Him Lord of your life?

“Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said to him, Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times. Then he went out and wept bitterly.” (Matthew 26:75) Peter failed Jesus. He denied the Lord three times. But notice that he did the right thing after that. Peter repented and he was sorry for his sins. Later, Jesus would come to Peter and restore him. What about you? Have you messed up. Have you fallen into sin? Jesus is so good. If you confess and turn from your sins Jesus will forgive and restore you also.

“Now Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked Him, Are you the King of the Jews?” (Matthew 27:11) The Romans didn’t understand it, the Jews missed it, and most people were clueless but Jesus is the real King. He came as a humble carpenter but He is the King of the Universe. Someday soon everyone will realize it because Jesus Christ is returning to earth and He will reign forever and ever. The Bible says He is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. The question for everyone today would be, is He the King of your universe?

“When He was accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.” (Matthew 27:12) Christ was perfect but He did not defend Himself. He was silent before His accusers. Jesus Christ would be vindicated by God. He would rise from the dead. Perhaps, sometimes we are too quick to defend ourselves and defend our own rights. The Bible talks about being humble and considering others better than ourselves. So learn to listen more and talk less. If you do what’s right you won’t have to defend yourself, God will do it for you.

“When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is called Christ?” (Matthew 27:17) What a choice. A criminal and murderer or the purest, kindest man that ever lived. Yet the people chose Barabbas. Amazing isn’t it? How can people be so dense? It is the same today. People choose everything instead of Christ. They choose darkness instead of light. They choose sin instead of righteousness. And they choose men instead of God! How about us? What is more important to you? Whom do you choose- Jesus Christ or something else?

“Then he released to them Barabbas, but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified.” (Matthew 27:26) Being whipped by the Romans was absolute torture. It was called the little death. People would shriek into insanity or bite their tongues off. Jesus Christ went through this for us. He didn’t have to but He loves us so much. With the stripes on His back we have been healed. Thank you Jesus for all you’ve done. Who wouldn’t want to serve such a loving God?

“They braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” (Matthew 27:29) The soldiers mocked Christ and pretended He was a King. Little did they know that He is the King. Only Jesus is not just King of the Jews He is the King of the entire Universe. When Jesus Christ returns to earth, every knee will bow to Him and every person will confess that He is Lord. So, take your pick, you can bow now or bow later. However, only those who bow and make Him Lord of their lives now will be saved when He returns later.

“They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head.” (Matthew 27:30) It’s hard to imagine the humiliation and shame they put Jesus through. He is the Creator who made the entire world. Then He came to give His life to save His creation. Jesus Christ was also the only perfect man that ever lived. He healed the sick and gave people hope. He taught the truth about God and brought God’s Kingdom to all who would listen. How could people hate Him so? Jesus was despised and rejected but He is the meaning to life. Look throughout human history. Check out every ruler, prophet, religious leader, aristocrat, or famous person. There is no one who compares to Jesus. That’s because Jesus Christ is the one and only Lord God of the Universe!

“When they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among them, casting lots.” (Matthew 27:35) The Bible does not describe crucifixion. It just says they did it to Jesus. Those who lived back then knew what it meant. It was the most wicked, diabolical, horrendous, and awful way a person could die. It was extreme torture, slow and excruciating painful. If you ever wonder if there is a God and does He care- you need look no further than the cross. Here we see the absolute love of God poured out in the blood of Christ. We love Him because He first loved us. Oh, that everyone would love and serve Jesus for all He’s done!

“Now the centurion, and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared exceedingly saying, “Truly this was the Son of God.” (Matthew 27:54) The Romans had crucified many people. But this execution was different. As they observed Jesus dying and saw the sun turn dark, the earthquake, and noticed how Jesus responded they were amazed. This man was different. They remembered the stories about His miracles. They had heard that Jesus said He was the Son of God. When they watched Him die, it convinced them. What about you? Are you convinced yet? If you will read the Bible with an open heart and observe all that Jesus did you too will say like the centurion, truly this was the Son of God!

“Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.” (Matthew 28:1) Would you like to see the tomb of Jesus Christ? You can visit it over in Israel. However, there is one thing you will notice about it- Jesus isn’t there! Funny isn’t it? It’s His burial site but He isn’t there. That is where the body used to be! Jesus only borrowed the tomb for three days. You see, Jesus Christ is alive and that fact makes all the difference in the world!

“He is not here, for He has risen, just like He said. Come, see the place where the Lord was laid.” (Matthew 28:6) Jesus Christ is alive! This is the truth that brings hope to a troubled world. If Christ were not alive there would be no hope, no meaning to life and no Heaven. Thank God He arose- just like He said He would. This proves that Jesus is the Son of God and that the Bible is true. There is a Heaven to be gained and a Hell to escape. The resurrection proves there is life after death. The Bible promises eternal life for those who love and serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

“Go quickly and tell his disciples, He has risen from the dead, and behold, He goes before you into Galilee; there you will see Him.” (Matthew 28:7) His own followers did not understand at first because they thought Jesus was dead. When they saw Him alive it changed everything for now they would give their lives to spread the good news. His disciples would boldy proclaim to the world that Jesus is the answer. They knew they would be with Him forever.

“As they went to tell his disciples Jesus met them saying, “Greetings!” They came and took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him.” (Matthew 28:9) Now, only God deserves worship. So you see, Jesus Christ is God. The Bible says the disciples worshiped Him. Christ was worshiped at His birth and He was worshiped at His resurrection. Jesus is worshiped in Heaven now and forever. If you are planning on being in Heaven someday you should start worshiping Him now. Worthy is Jesus the Lamb that died to receive glory and honor and power!

“Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.” (Matthew 28:18) Do you realize what this statement means? It means Jesus Christ is the supreme ruler of the universe. He is in charge of everything. He is Lord over all. The question becomes- is He your Lord? If you fail to follow Christ and obey His commands you are out of sync with the entire universe. No wonder things don’t seem to work out. It will never feel right until you bow in humble adoration and surrender to the Mighty King of the Universe!

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19) If you are a
Christian you have a job to do. There is a mission. We are to go throughout the whole world and tell people the wonderful news that Jesus Christ loves them, died for their sins, and rose again! Those who accept Christ as Lord and Savior are to be baptized in water. Then believers are to become disciples and this means followers of Christ. Those who say they are Christians but don’t live for Christ or follow the Bible are deceived. When you are truly saved you will be a disciple of Christ.

“Teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) As we take the gosple into the world we are to teach people the commands of Christ. The Lord wants us to obey Him. For if Jesus is Lord it means we submit to His authority. Then Matthew ends with a wonderful promise. As we serve Christ, preach the gospel, and do His will He will be with us. The presence of Jesus will be with us wherever we go. What a promise. Wherever I am in the whole world- anytime of day and in any place- Jesus is with me. I wouldn’t trade that for the world!
